What is Cancer?
Cancer is an uncontrolled proliferation of cells in your body. It is the result of a change in a single cell’s DNA that causes it to grow out of control. As these cells grow out of control, they accumulate more and more DNA mutations and can gain the ability to spread throughout the body.
What is CBD?
CBD (cannibidiol) is a non-psychoactive component of the hemp plant. Upon binding to specific receptors, it changes the cell via a cascade of protein messages. Humans have been using this chemical for centuries in a number of medicinal preparations. It has demonstrated promise in treating numerous diseases including, gout, rheumatism, several neurological disorders, and even cancer.
How Does CBD help with Cancer?
CBD has displayed numerous anticancer affects in both in vitro and in vivo (in a lab dish and in live patient) studies. Cancer cells are just your own cells that are proliferating out of control. CBD has been shown to downregulate certain proteins that progress cancer cells through the cell cycle. In other words, CBD blocks cells from reproducing and creating a larger tumor.
CBD upregulates proteins that cause automatic cell death. This kills tumor cells that are replicating excessively. This compound has also been shown to decrease the amount of angiogenesis (or growth of new blood vessels) that cancer cells need in order to grow.
CBD has also been documented to decrease metastasis (or movement of the cancer to other parts of the body via the blood) by down regulating specific genes that are expressed only in malignant cells. CBD has the capability to specifically target cancerous cells that grow more quickly and wildly than the regular healthy cells in our bodies.
What do I need to know before taking CBD for cancer?
Though there is no guarantee that CBD will “cure” cancer. However, it does have growing scientific evidence to back up its ability to slow cancer growth and halt metastasis to other organs.
Another great benefit is that there are almost no documented side effects to CBD in comparison to other, more aggressive cancer treatments like chemotherapy.
The idea behind chemotherapy is to kill all fast growing cells in an effort to halt only cancerous ones. So it has the potential to target normal non-cancerous cells in your body that have high rates of replication like your skin or hair.
Chemo drugs can lead to illness because they kill your fast growing blood cells, including white blood cells that fight off infections. Along with this, chemo can cause:
- nausea and vomiting
- neurological problems
- mood changes
- fertility problem
If you decide to do chemotherapy it may still be beneficial to take CBD as a supplement. Along with its anti-cancer effects, it can also help with the many side effects of chemo such as pain and nausea.
CBD is an all natural drug that is cultivated from the cannabis plant and all signs point to a promising future in battling cancer.
